A Gentle Guide for Yorkies, Morkies & Shorkies

Few things are as precious as those last few moments of sleep before the alarm goes off.

And yet… somehow your little pup knows.

If your Yorkie, Morkie, or Shorkie seems to have a sixth sense for waking you up just minutes before your alarm sounds, you are not alone. At Lil Luxe Pups, we hear this often — especially from loving puppy parents adjusting to life with a small breed.

The good news? Early wake-ups are manageable with structure, consistency, and a gentle approach.

Let’s walk through this the Lil Luxe way.

Is It a Puppy or an Adult Dog?

If you have a young puppy, middle-of-the-night or early-morning wake-ups are completely normal. Tiny bladders require frequent potty breaks.

However, once your dog is fully potty trained and physically mature, they should be able to sleep until your household wakes.

If your adult dog consistently wakes you too early, it’s time to gently reset the routine.

According to the American Kennel Club sleep and routine guidance, adult dogs should typically sleep through the night once fully trained and healthy.

1. Rule Out Health Concerns First

Before adjusting behavior, always consider medical causes.

Small breeds like Yorkies, Morkies, and Shorkies can be prone to:

  • Urinary tract infections

  • Sensitive digestion

  • Blood sugar fluctuations

  • Mild discomfort from dental or joint concerns

If your dog suddenly starts waking earlier than usual, consult your veterinarian. Discomfort often shows up as restlessness.

At Lil Luxe Pups, we always say: behavior changes are communication.

2. Provide Evening Exercise & Mental Stimulation

A well-exercised dog sleeps better.

Small breeds may be tiny, but they are intelligent and energetic. Mental stimulation is just as important as physical movement.

Try adding:

  • A slightly longer evening walk

  • Structured play like fetch or gentle tug

  • Food puzzles or enrichment toys

  • A short 5–10 minute training session

Evening engagement helps your pup feel fulfilled and settled before bedtime.

A tired dog is a restful dog.

3. Adjust Feeding & Potty Timing

Timing matters more than most people realize.

If dinner is served too late, digestion may trigger an early-morning bathroom need.

Consider:

  • Feeding dinner earlier in the evening

  • Offering the final potty break as close to bedtime as possible

  • Keeping the bedtime routine consistent every night

A high-quality, easily digestible diet can also reduce early urgency.

Small breeds thrive on routine. Predictability creates calm.

4. Create a Sleep-Friendly Environment

Yorkies, Morkies, and Shorkies are alert and deeply bonded to their humans. Light, sound, or subtle movement can wake them.

To encourage longer sleep:

  • Close curtains to block early sunlight

  • Use white noise or soft calming music

  • Turn off stimulating background noise

  • Cover a crate to create a darker, den-like environment

  • Use a small exercise pen if your pup roams at night

If they sense you stirring, they may wake in anticipation of attention. Keep the environment calm and consistent.

5. Train the Alarm — Not the Instinct

This is one of our favorite gentle conditioning methods.

If your dog wakes you at 6:15 a.m., but you would prefer 6:30 a.m., do not jump directly to 6:30.

Instead:

  1. Set your alarm for 6:05 a.m. the first week.

  2. Get up only when the alarm sounds.

  3. Gradually move the alarm forward in 5-minute increments each week.

Your dog will begin associating the alarm with the official start of the day.

Over time, their internal clock adjusts to your schedule.

Small breeds are intelligent and highly responsive to consistency.

Be Mindful of Reinforcement

If your dog wakes you and you immediately:

  • Speak to them

  • Pet them

  • Let them outside

  • Feed them

You may unintentionally reinforce the early wake-up.

Unless there is a true potty need, remain calm and neutral until your chosen wake-up time.

Consistency reshapes habits.

Sometimes It’s Just Personality

Some dogs are naturally early risers.

Confident, alert female dogs may be more likely to wake early and “check in.” Many male dogs tend to be slightly more laid-back. However, every puppy is unique.

Your dog is not trying to frustrate you.

They are responding to instinct, routine, and love.

And they adore you.

Final Thoughts from Lil Luxe Pups

Teaching your dog to sleep later requires patience and structure. Small breeds flourish when expectations are clear and routines are steady.

With:

  • Consistent evening engagement

  • Proper feeding and potty timing

  • A calm sleep environment

  • Gentle alarm conditioning

You can reclaim your mornings.

And remember — whether your pup wakes early because they love you or because breakfast is on their mind, they are simply responding to the world as they know it.

At Lil Luxe Pups, we are always here to guide you the gentle way.
