Yorkshire Terriers, or “Yorkies,” are known for their small stature and bold personalities. These pint-sized pups may be small, but they certainly don’t lack confidence or a sense of adventure. Full of spunk and curiosity, Yorkies have big dog attitudes packed into tiny bodies. Loyal to their families, they can also be a bit wary of strangers, often barking at unfamiliar sounds or visitors. While Yorkies are sometimes thought of as little dogs with big barks, there’s so much more to them than meets the eye.  Learn more about this curious breed on the AKC Standard Yorkie page.

  1. A Name Tied to Their Origins

The Yorkshire Terrier got its name from its place of origin—Yorkshire, England. The breed was first developed in the region, and in 1870, it was officially recognized as the Yorkshire Terrier. The British Kennel Club registered them in 1874, and the American Kennel Club (AKC) followed suit in 1885. Their name and recognition reflect their rich history in England.

  1. Record-Breaking Small Dogs

Yorkshire Terriers have held the title of the smallest dog multiple times. In 1945, a Yorkie named Sylvia made history as the smallest dog ever recorded, measuring just 2.5 inches tall at the shoulder and weighing only 4 ounces. Other Yorkies, like Big Boss and Thumbelina, have also held the title of the smallest living dog, with Big Boss standing at just 4.7 inches tall. While most Yorkies weigh between 3-7 pounds and stand 6-9 inches tall, their tiny size has made them record-breakers!

  1. Originally Bred for Work

While Yorkies are now beloved as companion dogs, they were initially bred as working dogs. In the mid-1800s, these small dogs were used to catch rats in clothing mills. Their fine, silky coats were even joked about as being a byproduct of the looms. Their original job may seem far removed from the pampered pets they are today, but it shows just how versatile this tiny breed can be!

  1. Unique Coat Color Changes

Yorkie puppies are born with black and tan coats, but as they grow, their colors change. By the time they are around 6 months old, their coats start to shift—black fur turns to a shiny blue (a diluted black), and the tan fur becomes a rich golden color. This unique genetic trait continues to develop until the dog is around one or two years old, with the full color transition sometimes taking up to three years.

  1. A Heroic War Dog

One of the most famous Yorkshire Terriers in history was Smoky, a dog who played an important role during World War II. Rescued from the jungles of New Guinea by an American soldier, Smoky accompanied her owner on military missions, warning soldiers of impending dangers and even saving lives. Smoky is also credited with running a telegraph wire through a 70-foot pipe, a task that would have taken humans days to accomplish. In addition to her heroic feats, Smoky became one of the first therapy dogs, helping lift the spirits of injured soldiers. Smoky’s legacy is honored with memorials, acknowledging her bravery and remarkable contributions.

  1. Audrey Hepburn’s Yorkie Influence

Yorkshire Terriers gained even more fame thanks to the iconic Audrey Hepburn. Hepburn introduced her Yorkie, Mr. Famous, to the world, making the breed a favorite among celebrities. Mr. Famous was featured in magazines and even appeared in a scene in Hepburn’s movie Funny Face. Hepburn’s influence helped cement the Yorkie’s place in popular culture, making them one of the most adored celebrity pets.

  1. Exceptional Watchdogs

Despite their small size, Yorkies are excellent watchdogs. Their keen sense of hearing allows them to detect visitors long before they reach the door. While their barks may not deter intruders, they can alert you to any potential threats or even just a visitor at the door. Yorkies are more than just tiny dogs with a big bark—they’re courageous, loyal, and full of surprises! Whether they’re saving the day, charming celebrities, or keeping a watchful eye on their families, these little dogs continue to win hearts around the world.
